My Fishing Experience

I wanted to let you know who I am. My name is Howard Poe. I have been a fisherman for over 40 years. I started out fishing with my Grandfather and my Mom and Dad every since I was able to hold a fishing pole and cast it.

The way I got into fish is due to my Grandfather. He started inventing a fishing lure back in 1956. After he broke a bone in his neck and was unable to work for a while as he recovered. This was two years before I was even born.

He lived in a little town (at that time) call Modesto California. He loved to fish and because he lived in a trailer by the river he was able to enjoy his past time. While he was recovering from the broken bone in his neck. He would go down to the riverbank and fish. He would watch how the lure would work in the water and how the fish would react to it.

One day he had an ideal and he took one of his old lures and started whittling on it. He would change the shape of the lure and see how it reacted in the water. Once he got it to react the way he wanted it to he ended up getting it hung up on some brush and lost the lure.

He was able to remake the lure that he had lost and from there he started up a business of making fishing lures. He called them Poe's Nervous Miracle Bass Plugs. Now if some of you folks are old enough you might have heard of them. Now days they are called Poe's Super Cedars. They are made by the Yakima Bait Company in Washington. The lures that are made now days don't resemble the original design. But they are still a good lure to fish with.

As I was growing up my sister and I would go to my Grandparent's house during the summers and school vacations and help my Grandparents with making and packaging the lures. My Grandfather made all the machines that would cut the lures from the 1x1 cedar sticks. He would paint every single one by hand. I would stand there for hours watching him make his lures. I would ask him questions as to why he did certain things to the different lures. As he was making them he would explain to me why he did them. My Grandfather was one of the first people to discover the fish are not color blind and that is why he made lures of different colors.

My Grandfather would take me fishing all the time and he taught me how to master the use of his lures. He taught me what to look for to know where the fish would be at. This was before the invention of fish finders. I still fish to this day without a fish finder. Both of my parents loved to fish also. When I wasn't fishing with my Grandfather I was fishing with my parents.

I have done all types of fishing, like Bass, Crappie, Trout and Salmon. I have fished lakes, rivers and the ocean. I have used everything from live baits to crank baits. I even done a little fly fishing. If it has anything to do with fishing I enjoy doing it.
